A Dark World

Hi Reader, welcome to 2026!

How's the new year feeling? Fast, slow or a little shaky? For all the resolutions and expectations, the year never turns out as what we hope it to be. But hope we can!

When we asked the TDK Award winners what they hoped for in the world for 2026 and it was pretty obvious that kindness and community were pretty high for a lot of people.

"My biggest hopes and dreams are more for community and kindness!" (Gizelle, San Diego)

"I hope we continue to embrace creativity, authenticity, and human connection, even as technology rapidly evolves." (Simon, Amsterdam)

So what can we do about that?

This months newsletter looks at creatives who speak about compassion and care in the creative world. And community? Well, hey that's what we're here for! #tdktuesdays are up running around the world, we have exciting new projects going on in the pipeline, and more city hosts to introduce to you.

We are also going hardcover! That's right. Pre-orders are now open for the first TDK book which will feature emerging designers around the world, interviews with leading design experts and city guides.

Lots to do and lots to see this year. We're so happy to be back into it and can't wait to celebrate all the amazing creatives in our community.

We asked a bunch of creatives about their hopes for the year ahead...

Laara Bonn

I know we’re all inclined to want better projects and more free time, global peace, to be more compassionate, calm, or whatever else, but I think those are ultimately the end results of whatever groundwork we choose to lay.

What I truly wish for is that all people, myself included, come to recognise the importance of knowing oneself and understanding our role in the whole. To understand the flow and rhythm of nature and to learn to move with it. I truly believe that this is the baseline for everything, and that if this work is done, all else will follow organically.

In 2026, I hope we remember that design is not just about solving problems, but about shaping how people feel in the world, and that we can do so with care and humanity. I hope to create less out of urgency and more out of intention and meaning.

So for myself I always have an annual goal of wanting to work on a TV title sequence or typography for a film, but to be honest, I just hope to once again continue to work on and create expressive type for brand campaigns and clients around the world.

For the rest of the world, I hope we see another boom in creativity especially human and handmade craft. I feel like with the rise of AI people are going to value the handmade stuff all that much more.
