Hey Reader!
How has your July been? If you're enjoying the summer up in the northern hemisphere, our team down here in Australia's super jealous. We've been braving the Melbourne ❄️ winter and really digging into the nitty gritty of TDK and what we provide for you all!
The past month has been pretty darn exciting. Our team's been reaching out to the TDK Community to get an even better understanding of what you all need to help you ✨thrive✨ in your creative careers. We've learned a whole heap of things – mainly that you're after JOBS👩💻.
With the cost of living going up paired with the daunting task of finding a job, we've wanted to help out in any way we can. Which is why our team's been getting together a ton of amazing resources created by industry experts and fellow creatives who are ✨thriving✨ in their own unique ways. This month we're featuring one of our favourite cities, South Africa's very own Cape Town! Sitting pretty amongst the iconic Table Mountain National Park and sparkling Table Bay – it's no wonder visitors head to Cape Town mainly to enjoy the great outdoors. Although, after a few days of hiking and swimming, make it a priority to visit some of the cities eclectic suburbs and bask in its growing food and art scene. Creativity and design are two tools used to reconnect the city following its complex history. Studios, galleries and events are popping up left and right. We're so darn proud of our two TDK Cape Town chapter hosts, Louise and Jess, for being a part of this transformation! |

Jade draws things. She draws things real good. Long time friend of TDK, we met Jade when we travelled to Cape Town back in 2017. Since then she's been carrying on being a creative powerhouse and even combined forces with her good mate and launched Best Friend Goods.

We were so excited to chat to this month's interviewee, the seriously talented designer and content creator based in California, Kat Romulo (you may know her as @edgykatrina 😉)! We've been following Kat's career for the past few years and have been amazed with how she's turned her one-of-a-kind side projects into a pretty epic creative career.

Yay, it's Kat! First up, tell us about you!
Hi, I'm Kat! I'm a graphic designer based in Los Angeles. My dream projects include designing a romance book cover, branding a chocolate bar, and doing a collaboration with Warby Parker. During my free time, you can find me learning how to use watercolor pencils, filming youtube videos, or eating chicken wings.
You're doing so much awesome stuff these days! How do you fit in your creative endeavours around your 'day job'?
I'd like to think that I work pretty quickly and have learned to manage my time well, so I manage to juggle client work with content creation most days while still working within the 9-5 schedule. I try to schedule all of my meetings on the same two days so that I can have uninterrupted time to create things. I need personal projects to re-energize me and prevent burnout, so sometimes I'll spend weekends doing that!
Lastly, do you have any advice for designers who feel like they're in a creative rut or want to find a new gig?
Don't put too much pressure on yourself. We all have creative ruts and forcing yourself to push through a period of burnout hardly ever works. Try turning to new sources of inspiration to re-energize you (like a museum, bookstore, or time with friends) and draw from things you really love. If you're looking for a new job, try to refresh your portfolio with new personal projects (which is how I've landed my clients and current projects)!
