What's happening in October Spotlight City: Manila โInterview: Regina Suarez โStuff we love! |

Hey Reader!
Hope you've had a fantastic month filled with tons of wins and good vibes!
October's been exciting but next month (aka this Friday ๐คฏ) is extra special.
Why's that?
Well because applications for the TDK Awards 2024 open this Friday, November 1st! That's right friends, if you're currently a design student or a new grad with less than two years of experience, get all your sexy work together and make sure you apply. You can find everything you need to know about the awards here. ๐
Overwhelmed with the idea of getting together a folio? Not sure where to begin? That's why we created the ๐ฅFIVE-DAY FOLIO SPRINT๐ฅ email course. It's prefect for designers who want to refresh their folios for the awards.
From November 1st onwards we'll also start announcing this year's TDK Awards 2024 judges. It's a pretty epic line-up this year. We can't wait for you to see who they are!
Oh one more thing... remember... #TDKtuesdays is next Tuesday ๐ฅณ. Head to our website, find your city chapter and go to their event next week. There have been so many amazing events over the past few month's. A BIG THANKS to our unbelievable TDK Hosts who put these on.
Enjoy friends! ๐ โ

For October's #TDKtuesdays in Manila, the TDK chapter had a workshop hosted by the amazing Dapat Studio on Designing How You Design โ a reflective workshop on how our values shape why and how we design. Dapat is a design studio focused on social good, using visual and strategic design to promote a more just and equitable world. Please go check them out! They're pretty awesome. |

Manila Studio
Serious Studio
โ
One of our favourite design studios in Manila is Serious Studio. The gang over at Serious has been pushing out brilliant branding work across Manila for over a decade โ they've made a massive impression on the creative scene in the Philippines. We interviewed them back in 2019 and we're still impressed with all the epic things they're getting up to in Manila. Go check them out!

This month we caught up with our TDK Manila Host โ Regina Suarez. Regina has been hosting #TDKtuesdays in Manila since 2019 ๐คฏ! We wanted to ask her what the creative scene's like in Manila, give us a breakdown of her design career and ask her more about what it's like to be a TDK City Host. Enjoy!

What's the creative scene like in Manila / the Philippines?
โ
The creative scene in the Philippines is very, very colorful--literally and figuratively. ๐ We're not at all shy about using color and I think that's very reflective of our culture. With that in mind, one would think the people in the industry would have strong personalities or be snobby or intimidating, BUT they're absolutely supportive and the most caring people you'll ever meet. Creative events are at an all-time high and it's such a nice sight to see and be a part of.
โ
Tell us about you and your design career!
โ
I am Regina and I have a very wonky design career. ๐ I am a full-time designer, helping mostly startups and small businesses. I started as a licensed architect, I still practice but I now do it on the side. The transition from being a licensed architect to a full-time designer included dabbling in music events, becoming a producer for Chikon Club Game Studio, starting a boutique agency called The Split Creative with my best friend, and other hustles within my wheelhouse. For the longest time, it's such an embarrassing story to tell since it's not as straightforward or linear as I imagined it to be, but one of my favorite learnings from Kookie Santos who spoke about this in one of our #TDKTuesdays is "Think of your career as a map instead of a ladder," where, instead of climbing up an imaginary stair, you learn and visit different versions of yourself.
โ
What's it been like being the TDK Manila host for so many years?
โ
It's an absolute honor and privilege! Whenever I get asked how I became Manila's TDK Host, I absolutely enjoy telling them that I just shot my shot without really expecting anything. Then I just got an email welcoming me as TDK's Manila Host, and then I met Frankie when she visited the Philippines, and then I had dinner and drinks with her and some legendary designers here in Manila. It's such an amazing experience to be a TDK Host as it really got me out of my shell, allowed me to experience so many things, and gave me an opportunity to meet amazing people. It's very heartwarming to see where the TDK Manila community is now, and I'm very excited for what's next.
